Float zone Silicon (FZ) is produced by vertical melting. It is very pure and has benefits over the standard Czochralski (cz) method. The purity is maintained by the production process either by vacuum or inert gasses. High transmission in the IR region when AR coatings are applied, particularly for 3-5 microns although it can transmit from 2 – 14 microns.
Widely used in semiconductor wafers this is also an ideal material for making precision optical filters and camera IR windows.
