How It All Started
The business began in 1955 as the Universal Quartz Grinding Company in Great Shelford. Initially, the company focused on grinding quartz for scientific use. Over time, the company expanded its range of products and services in order to meet the growing demand for optical components.
As technology evolved, so did UQG. Today, it offers a wide range of optical solutions, including filters, lenses and custom-made parts for industries such as aerospace, research and defence.
A True Family Business
One thing that sets UQG apart is that it has always been a family-run business. For three generations, the Biggs family has played a key role in the company’s day-to-day operations.

Kelvin Biggs’ Journey Through the Company
Kelvin Biggs, Managing Director, has worked at UQG for decades. He joined straight after leaving school and has worked in almost every department, including production, export, purchasing and sales.
