The Sapphire is AR coated both sides to maximise the transmission. This is for the visible region. Additional AR coatings can be from 400nm to 5 microns to maximise the IR region. Being only 1mm thick absorption is kept to a minimum but due to the strength of sapphire 1mm thickness is still robust enough for many applications.
